The quote is a story of the time when Theoden was about to sleep in his chambers. However, he has a conversation with Gandalf and they discuss the situation in which the king is going to lay his head. Throughout this conversation Gandalf is trying to make a point that although there are a lot of things that have been lost for ever from this world, that there are also a lot of things that have been gained. He points out that although the king may have been very proud of his great kingdom and his great kingdom was very much in danger, but there were other things out there that were not lost forever.
